IS AMP EFFECTIVE?
Students using the American Musicals Project curriculum are more engaged in learning American history and show improved vocabulary skills. This according to preliminary findings from a survey of teachers using AMP materials.
In the Fall of 2005, AMP launched an extensive research project. This project and its conclusions will lay the course for continued development of AMP’s teacher-training program, its existing materials and new curriculum units. Dr. Robert Horowitz from Columbia University Teacher’s College designed and administered an extensive survey of teacher experiences with AMP, both as participants in professional development workshops and in using AMP materials with their own students. Designed to draw information on the project’s overall effectiveness, the survey prompted teachers to reflect on their own training and to consider the highs and lows of working with AMP materials in the classroom.
Ninety percent of teachers who responded to the survey reported that AMP helped them teach more effectively. Eighty-eight percent of teachers reported that students learned more historical content when using AMP curriculum, and 69% of teachers believed that the AMP units helped improve their students’ vocabulary.
