How You Can Participate

Teacher Workshops
All schools are invited to schedule workshops with AMP’s Professional Development staff. Schools or regional administrators can purchase one single AMP workshop at a time, or larger study units as outlined below. Individual workshops cover one curriculum unit and last 1.5 hours. All participating schools receive the bi-annual AMP newsletter, privileged access to the Members Only area of AMP website and advance notice of upcoming AMP events. Teachers attending professional development workshops receive video materials and resource guides containing lesson plans, primary sources and guidance questions for relevant units.Leadership & Immersion SchoolsIn addition, AMP offers two programs of intensive professional development and follow-up support to Leadership Schools and Immersion Schools. Concentrating on three to five curriculum units, Leadership Schools will designate two 1.5-hour professional development sessions per unit. AMP staff also will provide additional phone and email support throughout the school year. Immersion Schools will cover ten curriculum units over sixteen 1.5-hour professional development workshops and includes support in the form of in-class visits and team-teaching assistance, as well as phone and email assistance, as needed.

Concentrated Study
AMP curriculum units work well as a concentrated study. Teachers interested in scheduling a series of workshops or schools considering participation in the Training School program can combine their professional development sessions in a theme as suggested below. There are a number of ways that the units can be combined and we invite discussion on how best to meet your educational needs.

Freedom
This three session concentrated study program explores the relationship between slavery and personal liberty in American history, from the passage of the Declaration of Independence through the Reconstruction Era. This course features materials from 1776, Big River and Showboat.

How the West was Won
Many historians have argued that westward expansion defined the United States. Incorporating excerpts from Paint Your Wagon and Oklahoma!, this course examines some of the key moments in the movement westward, including the Gold Rush, the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War, and takes a close look at the underlying struggles for power between white settlers and displaced Native Americans. There are a variety of ways to participate in AMP. Sessions can be held at N-YHS or at any school or regional location and can take place during the school day, after school and/or on Saturdays - teachers and administrators can choose the option that best suits their schedule.
